Dx Beach Feet: 4 Ways to Heal Your Summer Heels

Summertime fun means sporting sandals or- in many cases- going barefoot, that exposes your feet to the harsh elements of the season. Check out these 4 tips that are just what the doctor ordered to heal your summer heels!

Wash
It’s just not enough to let the water and suds trickle down to your feet when showering and claim that they are clean. A barefoot day at the beach or a simple saunter in your favorite flip-flops can expose your feet to all sorts of yuck-n-muck. The solution? Take care to give your feet a thorough washing DAILY (that means rubbin’ and scrubbin’). Foot washing is like hand washing and should be done routinely. It is also a great idea to soak your feet with warm water and Epsom salt. Soaking your feet provides a one-two punch of deodorizing and drawing out toxins to keep them funk-free!

Inspect
Bacteria, Virus, and Fungus….oh my! Your feet can become infected with any of these “beauties” with any cuts or openings of the skin. Whether you have the displeasure of stepping on rocks, shells, or any foreign object openings of the skin can be dangerous- large and small. That’s why it is essential to regularly inspect your feet for any open wounds or lesions that may be present. Warts can indicate viruses (such as HPV), while redness, swelling, and/or itching can be signs of bacterial (E. coli) or fungal (Athlete’s foot) infections.

Exfoliate
Unforgiving surfaces such as hot sand and pavement can lead to a load of calluses on the feet. To transition your feet from rough to smooth, exfoliate the callused areas. Be careful to ALWAYS exfoliate WET skin- preferably when showering or soaking. Tools, such as pumice stones or foot files are most aggressive, but scrubs can also do the trick.

Moisturize
Once you remove the skin you don’t want, you always want to show a lil love to the skin you do want. And nothing says T-L-C like a rich moisturizer. A daily slather of moisturizer to clean feet smoothes the skin and provides nutrients to make your feet very supple. It’s the perfect finish to healing those summer heels!

Oh!...and as always, if you’re going to continue to be out in the sun… DON’T forget the sunscreen!!

New Year, New You: 4 Tips to Improve Yourself From Head to Toe

The ball has dropped, you’ve popped the cork, and partied the night away!  It is officially a new year!  But as we give a big ol’ hey y’all to 2016, here are 4 tips you should keep in mind while striving to become a New You in the New Year!

PARTY SMARTY
Whether you have been “cuttin’ a rug” to bring in the new year or have made that all-too-familiar new year’s resolution of finally shedding those unwanted pounds, the bottom line is that your feet take quite a licking. To reward your tired twosomes, it is always a good idea to keep them in tip-top shape. You can’t go wrong with soaking, scrubbing, and moisturizing!

RESOLUTION SOLUTION
As a new year arrives, so come the countless new year’s resolutions…and leading the way for the most common is…you guessed it…WEIGHT LOSS! Studies show that the average American gains up to 10lbs during the holiday season. But while we make these promises to shed our holiday spread, finding the perfect pair of “sneaks” is an absolute must for any successful workout routine.

EAT SWELL
Shedding those excess pounds is only half the battle to obtain AND maintain good health. A vitamin-rich diet matched with routine exercise is the perfect one-two punch for a healthy new you!

BOTTOMS UP
It is no secret how beneficial water is for our bodies. Drinking the recommended 9 glasses per day gives your body a much better chance in fighting such conditions as joint pain and relaxing those cramping achy muscles-just to name a few. It can also be quite helpful to prevent hangovers. Excess alcohol that is consumed dehydrates the body and contributes to the crummy, not-so-good feelings felt the morning after. Consuming water before, during, and after a night of drinking will work wonders. Cheers!

AGONY OF THE FEET: 4 Essential Steps for Healthier Feet

With an average of 3,000-5,000 steps taken daily, our feet are subject to more than their share of exposure to undesirable conditions- day-to-day activities, improper shoe gear, sweating, walking barefoot, etc.-that bring on an onslaught of abuse.  Yet most of us don’t even bother to wash our feet when we are in the shower. We lather-up every other part of our bodies and simply let the water and suds fall to our feet, without even a thought (talk about a trickle-down-effect). Next to the heart, our feet are one of (if not THE) most important parts of the body, but are greatly underappreciated.

Our feet take care of us, NOW it’s high time we return the favor!

Feast your eyes on 4 essential steps for healthier feet!

(Oh and did I mention they ALL can be done at home?…..AMEN!)

1.       Soaking

·         What:  A great way to wind down your day. Epsom salt foot soaks reduces stress, relieves tired achy feet, and draws out the dirt and toxins your feet accumulates throughout the day.

·        How: Take a foot basin and fill with 8 cups of warm (NOT hot) water, mix with ~5oz of Epsom salt. Double the amount of Epsom salt and mix with warm soothing bath (Ahhh!)

·         When: 3 to 4 times weekly

·         Don’t forget:  A great aid for sweaty and smelly feet. Excessive use can cause dryness, be sure to ALWAYS follow-up with a moisturizer for a reliable one-two combo.

2.       Scrubbing

·         What: A great exfoliant is a MUST to remove dead cells and unveil shiny healthy skin.

·         How: Message into feet giving special attention to rough heels and callused areas.

·         When: 3 to 4 times weekly

·         Don’t Forget: Make sure to apply to dampened skin, preferably after soaking or bathing. Be mindful of your exfoliant of choice.  Large granules (i.e. coarse sea salt) can cause abrasions and skin irritation (Not fun). Can’t go wrong with sugar scrubs… ALWAYS a great option!

3.       Moisturizing

·         What: A rich foot cream creates a protective sheen that seals in hydration and moisture.

·      How: Liberally apply the cream onto your feet, giving special attention to heels and calluses.

·         When: 1 to 2 times daily

·         Don’t Forget: Best used after scrubbing away those pesky dead skin cells, to allow better penetration for foot cream. Put on a nice comfy pair of clean cotton socks after applying cream before bedtime to further lock in moisture.

4.       Powdering

·         What: Foot powder wards off excess moisture eliminating sweaty feet.

·         How: Give the inside of your shoes, the soles of your feet, and in between the toes a nice dusting.

·         When: 1 to 3 times daily

·         Don’t Forget: Less moisture equals no breeding ground for bacteria to cause foot odor. Clean dry cotton socks and drying (dab dry NOT wipe) clean feet can also help in keeping your feet odor-free!

So there you go! You are well on your way to reviving your feet and making them look (and feel) absolutely HEAVENLY!

Won’t you share your thoughts on the steps mentioned?
